The capital De Moines, named by the first French explorers is a city rich in amusement parks and interesting museums, such as the Science Center of Iowa and the Capitol Building.
De Moines is also a great place for jazz, with daily concerts throughout July. In Indianola there is the National Balloon Museum, where during the National Balloon Classic the skies fill up with colorful hot air balloons.
Iowa City is another place with many historical sites, the Iowa University campus and museums.
The Maquoketa Caves State Park is the most unique park in Iowa; here one can explore the area and caves, where early Native American artifacts have been found.
Along the two national scenic byways there are magnificent views to be has, notably on the Loose Hills Scenic Byway that follows the Missouri River in the west and on the Great River Road along the Mississippi River in the east.
The summers in Iowa are hot and humid, while winters are cold with snowstorms and occasional blizzards.
